How to improve energy efficiency within school lettings

Maximising energy efficiency – getting the most out of the energy you consume – and reducing your carbon footprint are subjects all businesses, organisations, schools and individuals are currently talking about – particularly within the last couple of years – have become something of a priority for many; reducing energy costs whilst positively contributing to the UK’s efforts to reduce the effects of climate change for a brighter future.

And, if energy efficiency is something you’re currently actively trying to implement across your school either to save money or to reduce carbon emissions (or both!), you may be pleased to hear there are a number of things you can do to improve energy efficiency in school lettings. Let’s go through them…

Improving energy efficiency in school lettings

Move bookings online: moving your facilities hire bookings online is one of the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency in school lettings – moving away from any paper-based or telephone based bookings processes and to an online, pre-built system.

What’s more, not only will this serve to improve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of your school, but it will also – in the majority of cases – serve to improve customer experience as booking online has become the standard for many hirers looking to hire affordable spaces with ease and convenience.

Move communications online: moving communications online is also an effective way to increase the energy efficiency of your lettings and reduce your carbon footprint as writing and receiving letters or making lots of phone calls can be both costly to your school and to the planet – 1kg of paper, for example, equals 1kg of CO2 – whereas the carbon footprint of a single email is 0.3g CO2e.

Ensure equipment is switched off after use: it’s easy to overlook just how much energy is used by electronic equipment such as projectors and computers, and ensuring organisations, clubs, groups and classes hiring your spaces switch off this equipment appropriately once their session(s) is over will make a significant impact to your energy efficiency efforts, saving you a surprising amount on your energy bills.

It can be as simple as adding a clause into any contract or terms & conditions that states the hirer is responsible for switching off any electrical equipment used within the space.

Make changes to lighting: there are many changes you can make to the lighting within your school to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. For example, switching from traditional light bulbs to LED can save up to 90% energy.

Automatic timers set to switch lights off after working hours are also an effective way to ensure energy and cost savings, and also reduce the risks of a light or two being mistakenly left on overnight!

Utilise social media for promotions: social media is one of the most effective and far reaching tools available in the digital world and utilising social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) can do wonders for your school lettings, as well as improving energy efficiency; helping you reach new audiences quickly and easily.

Alongside this, social media scheduling tools make planning and creating multiple days or weeks of social media posts all at one time extremely easy and time efficient – meaning your staff have more time to dedicate to high value tasks and their everyday to-do list!
