Running a successful holiday camp

Running your first holiday camp this summer? Here are some helpful hints & tips around how to run a successful holiday camp; what to consider and what to look out for.

How to run a successful holiday camp

Do your research: research, research, research! Observe similar local holiday camps and/or clubs to understand what they offer and how you are unique; it’s your uniqueness – your USP – that will draw participants to you. What’s more, it’s important to ensure that any similar local camps or clubs don’t follow the same schedule as yours – this could significantly reduce attendance and impact bookings.

Promote your camp: promoting and marketing your camp to the right people is essential to its success. Consider posting regular, meaningful updates on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and developing a simple website where those interested can either book online or get in touch to book their places. The more you shout about what you do, the more people you’ll reach! Beyond social media, working with organisations well-versed in your chosen field will surely make a huge impact on bookings, as established organisations will already have an established network of contacts they can introduce you to.

Choose a great venue: a key element of a successful holiday camp is the venue, especially if you’re investing in a long term let, and there are many things that make a venue great! Including –

  • Accessibility, such as providing accessible toilets, lifts, ramps or baby changing units
  • Proximity to local transport links, as choosing a venue that’s easy to get to and from during the hours occupied will encourage attendance
  • Offering free parking, ideally at the venue or nearby, as many attendees will be driving or driven to the camp by their parents or guardians
  • Providing ample space, as well as a variety of facilities and amenities; this will support increased booking, as well as attendee comfort and enjoyment
  • Affordability – as finding an affordable yet well-equipped and spacious venue will allow you to pass any cost savings onto your attendees; driving down costs or offering small discounts on group bookings, for example, or even increasing the variety of activities you can offer

Health & safety and risk assessments: ensure you’ve completed any necessary risk assessments and have put health & safety measures in place, including insurances and first aid facilities, as well as necessary training. Within this, when booking your venue, be sure to ask about fire exits and any health & safety measures the those managing the venue have already put in place.

Have fun!: Don’t forget to have a good time! If you enjoy what you do, your attendees and participants will surely have a great time too; after all, one of the reasons they’ll book with you is to have fun over the holidays!
