Holiday club ideas

With the holidays coming up, we thought it would be fun to go through a number of different holiday club ideas for primary school children, created to [hopefully!] inspire new holiday clubs, those who aspire to have or are planning to start a holiday club this year!

Holiday club ideas for primary school children

For a fun and engaging primary school holiday club, consider a mix of creative, active, and educational activities, such as themed days, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, and games, with options for both indoor and outdoor play – especially when the weather is good!

Holiday club ideas include:

Sports and active activities: especially during the spring and summer holidays – Easter, May half term and the 6 weeks holidays between July and September – sports and ‘active activities’ such as scavenger hunts or games of tag, capture the flag or orientation can be really fun outdoor activities for primary school children; offering the opportunity to learn & develop a range of social and emotional skills, whilst enjoying & exploring the great outdoors. However, when outdoors for longer periods of time, try to find easily accessible areas of shade, supply and/or encourage children to drink lots of water and keep safe in the sun!

Arts & crafts activities: painting, drawing, making collages, creating masks, or decorating boxes can be really fulfilling, relaxing activities for children that also help them work on essential skills like fine motor skills, creative thinking, enhancing their problem-solving skills and promote self-expression. Either as part of a whole day of activities or a breakaway from others, arts & crafts activities can inspire everyone!

Dance & drama activities: dance & drama holiday clubs aren’t just for the most confident and outgoing children! Dance & drama can help to create confident and outgoing children and are great for improving self-esteem, creativity, imagination & creative thinking, team work and collaboration, and self expression. Alongside this, dance & drama activities can also help improve coordination, mobility & movement, balance and muscle strength, as well as being immensely fun and certainly something ‘a little bit different’ for a lot of young children!

Nature exploration activities: it’s incredibly valuable for a child’s development to get outside and explore nature, so going for walks, having picnics outside or exploring/searching for wildlife at the local river and learning more about what’s around them would be a great idea for a holiday club activity. You could even combine ‘Nature Explorers’ with some of the other activities and holiday club ideas listed here to appeal to a wider audience of potential attendees – like drawing pictures of the insects found along the riverbank or pressing some flowers found along a nature trail.

Running a successful holiday club

To run a successful holiday club, leaders should always consider:

  • Making the club and/or activities fun & engaging
  • Ensuring every child is safe, feels safe and feels supported
  • Communicating clearly with both adults and children
  • Offering a range of different activities for differing skills, abilities & interests
  • Foster creativity, friendships and, again, fun!
  • Supervise children closely
